THE CLAIM
“One precise momentum threshold makes breakouts much stronger.”
A testable question
Does a breakout with RSI(14) above 55 / below 45 retain its advantage at nearby thresholds and after costs?
- Market / timeframe
- Artificial SYNTHETIC-UNIT · 15m · completed UTC bars
- Setup / condition
- Close beyond the previous 20 completed bars; selected RSI threshold 55 / 45, compared with 52 / 48 and 57 / 43.
- Outcome / comparison
- Average signed return after 4 bars, compared with ordinary breakouts matched by direction, time and volatility. This does not test win rate or execute trades.
- What would support the claim?
- A positive difference with useful uncertainty bounds that survives costs, nearby settings and separate periods.
- What would weaken it?
- An interval spanning zero, too few observations or a result that depends on one setting or period.
